There are tried-and-true ways to properly care for your skin, from the right way to cleanse your face,to the best moisturizers and sunscreens.
Before we start with the proper daily four-step skincare routine, you need to know your skin type.
How you care for your skin is utterly dependent on the type of skin you have: oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun-damaged.
Step 1: Cleanse
Simplicity is key. You need to find a good cleanser that works for you skin type and stick with it. Avoid bar soaps because they tend to dry out the skin. Bar soap should never touch your face and you should always use a white face towel.
Step 2: Toner
This second step is imperative and will refresh and condition the skin. It can bring your skin back to its proper PH balance. A good toner will also hydrate and oxygenate your skin.
Step 3: Exfoliate
Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. If you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference. One of the reasons men’s skin looks more youthful is because men tend to exfoliate daily when they shave. There are several ways to exfoliate skin, Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoid products are just a few.
Step 4: Moisturize
The correct moisturizer seals in moisture, and it should also protect your skin from sun damage and environmental debris. You should moisturize your skin every day and night. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from the right moisturizer.
Moisturizers with a good SPF are a must. Darker skin has a tendency to appear "dryer" when it’s not well lubricated. Penetrating oils and serums are best when applied after showering when skin is slightly damp and better able to retain moisture.
For the face, it’s best to use a separate moisturizer made specifically for your skin type. There are dry, oily and combination skin types. Once you identify yours, always use products geared toward your particular skin type.
You should use a facial cleanser in the morning and at night. It is especially important to use the cleanser each night to wash off cosmetics and a day’s worth of environmental grime. Dry skin tends to do better with emollient cleansers since soap can be even more drying. Oily and combination skin often likes more sudsy cleansers. You can use your clean hands to wash your face. Always use a white washcloth on your skin. Colored towels can cause irritation. Always use fresh and clean items to prevent an overgrowth of germs and bacteria, which will lead to skin problems.
